A bad investment are "spurious set" coins. This is another popular TV shopping show product, plus they're found in magazines and swap meets quite often. "Spurious sets," by my definition, are sets that are put together out of lower grade and/or common coins according to some kind of theme. The coins are usually placed in fancy plastic holders, with nice quality packaging, and then you pay $38.99 for a set of five coins that are worth $2.99 just because they were all minted during World War II, or the Vietnam War, or because they're from around the world and commemorate Marilyn Monroe or some sort of cartoon characters. Such coins are usually genuine, and will probably appreciate in value, but they probably won't be worth what you paid for them anytime during the next five generations! These are a favorite of dealers like Littleton.

Cherrypicking is the art of searching through coins, looking for the specimens that have been overlooked for some reason. When searching through rolls of coins that you from your local bank, you might be cherrypicking for die varieties or older dates (such as looking for Wheat Pennies among the circulating Lincoln Memorial Cents out there today.)

Whatever method you try to clean a coin, it's best to test it on a non-valuable coin of similar metal first. That way if a certain method does have bad effects, you'll find out before you ruin a valuable coin. I discovered this much to my chagrin when cleaning a batch of 1943 steel pennies in an acid solution. I'll never know if it would have worked, because I had the pennies in a galvanized steel container and the acid, combined with the galvanization, fused the pennies into one worthless chunk.

Let's look at the doomsday scenario of investing. Many investors, myself included, hold gold because it is a great store of value. If our economy ever goes under (I sure hope it doesn't), gold and silver coins will be used to pay for goods and services. I sure want to hold different denominations and types of coins because not all goods and services cost the same amount. The smaller 1/10 ounce gold coins are the best for this scenario because they can be used to pay for smaller purchases. Silver coins are also really important under this scenario.

If the return on bonds, equities and real estate is not adequately compensating for risk and inflation then the demand for gold and other alternative investments such as commodities increases. An example of this is the period of Stagflation that occurred during the 1970s and which led to an economic bubble forming in precious metals.

2008 Koala Coins from The Perth Mint of Australia

Tue, 22 Jul 2008 00:03:34 +0000
Australia’s iconic Koala coins are more popular than ever. The Perth Mint of Australia has launched a new coin series of 2008 proof gold Koalas, its first Gilded Koala and their second pure silver Koala. Each bullion coin depicts the "cuddly" koala and her baby sitting on a tree branch.

Mint Director Edmund Moy is not pleased with the demands the bill places on his organization so it's not likely to happen just yet. However it's encouraging to see progress being made in this direction.

Gagarin Space Coin Launched from The Perth Mint of Australia

Tue, 15 Jul 2008 18:30:49 +0000

2008 Yuri Gagarin silver proof coinThe Perth Mint of Australia has launched an innovative rotating coin commemorating the first man in space. The legal-tender, 1 oz silver coin celebrates the journey of Yuri Gagarin, who became the first person to enter space and orbit Earth for 1 hour 48 minutes aboard Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961.

The limited minted coin marks the second release in the Perth Mint's successful Orbit and Beyond Coin Series.

Gagarin's flight ushered in a new era of manned space exploration that the 2008 Yuri Gagarin silver proof coin memorializes in a most unique way.

The .999 fine silver coin is constructed to rotate or "orbit" around a central brass representation of a colorful earth.

Equally colorful is the outer reverse or tails design bearing a "montage of images" symbolizing Gagarin's journey and the border inscriptions "1961 FIRST MAN IN SPACE – YURI GAGARIN."

$500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 U.S. Federal Reserve Notes. Most $500 and $1,000 bills are quite common, and are typically worth only a small premium over face value. Circulated 1934 series notes are usually worth from $500 to $800 for the $500s and from $1,000 to $1,400 for the $1,000s, depending on condition. The 1928 series usually carries an extra 10% to 20% premium. Uncirculated $500 and $1,000 bills are quite desirable, although they are usually worth no more than twice face value. All Star Note high denomination bills are very rare, and $5,000 and $10,000 bills are worth much more than face value unless they are damaged, and we would suggest consultation with one of our currency experts if you possess one of these notes.

Buy the scarcest coin in the best condition that you can afford. Many collectible gold coins sell near the melt price of gold because there are more than enough around to cover demand. When gold increases or decreases in value, these coins will follow. But the higher the grade, the lower the population and demand will push up the price rather than just following the price of gold.

When you are planning to invest in gold, it would be wise to consult an investment consultant. He can help you match your investment goals with the right type of gold purchase. An investment firm can aid in making the right choice of gold investment products so as to hedge your portfolio. Gold bullion coins work well for those who want to capitalize on price movements of the precious metal. It is prudent to buy gold when its prices are low. But sometimes getting the right price may not be that easy. The same holds good for selling too. A buyer should not look at merely the price of the gold investment but its percentage over the gold price or the premium.

PCGS Guidance - Sacagawea Cheerios Dollars

Sat, 17 May 2008 19:15:51 +0000
As part of an effort in 1999 to promote the new Sacagawea Dollars, General Mills scattered 5,500 specially-packaged 2000-dated Sacagawea Dollars among 10 million boxes of Cheerios cereal. Five years later, it was discovered that the so-called “Cheerios” Dollars were actually from a different reverse die type.

INCREMENTAL GRADING

Editors Note: The original article was published in 2000, so obviously the  prices quotes are no longer accurate. However the concept and application of incremental grading is  important especially in todays market.
Old time collectors often bemoan the fact that there are “too many grades.” In their opinion, there ...]

Although central banks do not generally announce gold purchases in advance, some, such as Russia, have expressed interest in growing their gold reserves again as of late 2005. In early 2006, China, which only holds 1.3% of its reserves in gold, announced that it was looking for ways to improve the returns on its official reserves. Many bulls hope that this signals that China might reposition more of its holdings into gold in line with other Central Banks.

Given that gold is denser than almost all other metals, whether something is made of gold is extremely hard to fake. Simple determination of weight and volume should be sufficent. A coin that is the right size but is not gold, or has too much base metal, will be "light"; alternately, a coin that weighs right will be somewhat larger. (Platinum is unknown in ancient times; platinum is denser than gold, but since it is about twice as expensive, making a fake coin out of platinum would make no sense. In theory, fake coins could be made of uranium, but this does not appear to be a practical problem.)

The South African Kruggerand gold coins are the world's first gold bullion coin minted for investment, the Krugerrand is believed to be the most widely owned bullion coin in the world. The Krugerrand's obverse, designed by O. Schultz, features the first President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. Due to Kruger's relationship with Apartheid, these coins are the least expensive of all the major gold bullion coins. Kruger is surrounded by the name of his nation in Afrikaans and English, two of South Africa's eleven official languages: SUID-AFRIKA SOUTH AFRICA
